Shane Nickell Obituary

Shane Nickell, 67, of Wrigley, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center. He was born on July 7, 1957, in Malone, Kentucky, to Charline and Cell Nickell. Shane was a proud son of Eastern Kentucky and spent most of his life in Wrigley, where he built a legacy of hard work, loyalty, and deep love for his family.

Shane dedicated many years of his life to working as a skilled pipe fitter and later served in the prison system. He was known for his strong work ethic, quiet strength, and the respect he earned from everyone he worked alongside.

He is survived by his loving family: his sister and brother-in-law, Denise and Marcus Orcutt; his daughter and son-in-law, Kellie and Michael Keeton; his son, Kaleb Nickell; and his three cherished granddaughters, Sophie Johnston, Charlie Keeton, and Henlie Keeton. Known affectionately as “Poppy,” Shane was the heart of his family. His granddaughters adored him and will always remember the moments they shared, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charline and Cell Nickell.

Shane had a passion for softball and was a standout player in his time. He played for teams such as Orange Crush, Salyers Coal, Towne Cinema, Ken’s Sports Shop, and the Blue Raiders. His dedication to the sport helped his teams earn three state championships—two ASA and one USSSA—as well as an ASA Midwest Regional Championship. He also competed in two ASA National Championships and one USSSA National Championship. His proudest memories were made on the field, where he formed friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Above all, Shane was a proud family man. He loved his people more than anything and never missed a chance to brag on them. He was also a loyal and generous friend, known for his sense of humor, his warmth, and his quiet strength.

Shane Nickell will be remembered for his love, his laughter, and the pride he carried in his family. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
