Powell Junior "Red" Smith

Powell Junior “Red” Smith, age 87, of West Liberty, KY, passed away on Monday, June 14, 2021, at his home after an extended illness.  He was born August 30, 1933, in Mima, KY, to Powell and Nickeytie Dawson Smith.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Powell and Nickeytie Dawson Smith; his first wife, India Cantrell Smith; his second wife, Lottie Luker Smith; his sisters, Ruby Landford, Bessie Holbrook, Monnie Montgomery, Nancy Pendleton; and his brothers, Ramey Harkless Smith, James B. Smith, and Doranto “Bud” Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Lois G. Smith, of West Liberty; one son, Timothy Junior Smith and wife, Anita of Alabama; two grandchildren, Chad Smith, and Brad and Cessily Smith; two great-grandchildren, Gian Smith and Branson Smith; five step-children, Gail & Danny Burden and Howell Evans of Alabama, Ron & Teri Robbins, Karin & Bill Brown, and Robyn Kidder, all of Ohio; and a host of step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Affectionately known as “Red” by his family and many friends, Red and Lois were married on July 2, 2012.  They have been so happy together, living in their home on Smith Creek, on land beside Red’s childhood home.  Red loved living back in Kentucky and enjoyed exploring the hillsides ginseng hunting and tapping maple trees to make maple syrup.

Red was a factory worker, mobile home trucker, and a leading chicken farmer by trade while living in Alabama for over 50 years.  Red enjoyed coon hunting, gardening, and was especially known for raising huge watermelons.  Red loved life and loved his family and friends fiercely.  Usually dressed in his trademark khaki shirt, pants, and cap, he loved to joke and tell stories.  Red was fun-loving, charismatic, and with a wink and a grin, you knew he was your friend for life.  He will be missed by all that knew and loved him.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, June 18, 2021, at 2:00 p.m., at the Potter Funeral Home in West Liberty, KY, with Bro. Jackie Smith officiating.  Burial in the Elisha Smith Cemetery, Smith Creek, West Liberty, KY.  Visitation from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 18, 2021 at the funeral home.
