Lura Estelle (Elam) Tyra

Lura Estelle Tyra, 97, of Altamonte Springs, died on July 5th 2023. Estelle was born January 5th, 1926 in Hazard, KY to Corbett and Carrye Hay Elam. 

She grew up on a farm in Eastern Kentucky. Estelle was a real life Rosie the Riveter! Her first job was at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH where she ran a machine that cut pistons for WW2 aircraft. She married returning WW2 veteran Leonard Raymond Tyra and they had 5 children: Peggy Caswell (Gary), Leonard Tyra Jr, Pamela Sapp (Jim), Margie Shanks* (Joseph) and Roger Tyra. 

At only 4'8", she was short in stature but a giant to those who had the privilege of knowing her. She was overflowing with joy and optimism , even in some of life's hardest moments. She was an incredible care-giver and it was her joy to take care of her family. She loved cooking, gardening, dancing, and raising the farm animals, especially the baby calves. 

She had eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.  

Visitation from 5-8 p.m., Saturday, July 8, 2023 at Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home in Apopka, FL.  A visitation will also be held from 11 a.m. - 12 noon on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Potter Funeral Home in West Liberty, KY.  Funeral Service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, July 15, 2023 with Chaplin Adam Bowman officiating.  Burial will follow in the Grassy Lick Cemetery, Grassy Creek, KY.
