Keith Hammonds of West Liberty, KY, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2024, at U.K. Medical Center, Lexington, KY, at the age of 69 years, 4 months, & 4 days. He was born Wednesday, May 25, 1955 at Mt. Sterling, KY, son of James Robert “Jim Bob” & Helen Marie Smith Hammonds.
Keith was united in marriage to Lyla Kay Fannin. This union was blessed with two sons, Jared & Kyle. Keith was a retired Heavy Equipment Operator for the State Highway Department. He was a Christian and of the Pentecostal Faith.
Keith loved playing and watching sports. Playing sports started very young for him all through school. When he played sports he was there to win. He carried the love of sports over into his boys, Jared and Kyle, who also started playing sports young all through their school years. Keith loved Kentucky sports, mostly basketball and football. When they play on T.V., you would think the world had stop. Keith loved his Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Reds, and N.Y. Yankees. He disliked the Tennessee Vols, Louisville Cards, and Cincinnati "Bungals" as he called them. Keith loved watching the Cincinnati Reds when they were the “Big Red Machine”. One of his all-time favorite baseball players and Hero and the reason he wore #14 was Pete Rose. Keith played competitive softball for 40 + years. He played different positions. Pitching being his favorite since he had the ball in his hand every pitch. Keith’s biggest accomplishment that he was proud of and of the team while playing with H & W softball team was winning the Gold Medal at the Bluegrass State Games with Jared on the team and Kyle helping Donnie.
Keith enjoyed watching his westerns, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Rifleman, and any John Wayne movies. Everyday when Keith was at home, no matter what he was doing inside or outside, at 2 p.m., it was time to go watch his favorite western, "Bonanza". It didn't matter that he had watched it over and over again. Keith still enjoyed watching it again. His favorite hobby now was mowing on his John Deere riding mower and mowing 2-3 times a week. Keith loved being with his family. He was proud and supported his boys, Jared & Kyle. Keith will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and uncle, and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
