Gerleen Jones Nickell of Shelbyville, KY, formerly of West Liberty, KY, passed away Sunday, December 20, 2020 at Crestview Center, Shelbyville, KY, at the age of 80 years, 1 month, and 5 days. She was born Friday, November 15, 1940 at West Liberty, KY, daughter of the late Lester & Mariah Elizabeth Gevedon Jones.
Gerleen was united in marriage to James Merle Nickell. This union was blessed with two children, Tim & Jan. She was a graduate of Morgan County High School and the University of Kentucky where she received her Master’s Degree in Education. She taught 6th grade for 28 years where she was a teacher at Deep Springs Elementary in Lexington, KY and at Ruth Moyer in Ft. Thomas, KY. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She will be missed by all of her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, James Merle Nickell; four brothers, Harold Jones, Harry Curtis (Buck) Jones, Ray Jones, and John Jones; and three sisters, Kathleen Jones (infant sister), Pauline Jones Sias, Sandra Jones Frederick.
Gerleen is survived by her two children, Tim Nickell (Yolanda) of Shelbyville, KY and Jan Church (Jamie) of Louisville, KY; six grandchildren, Will Gray, Kelly Claire Gray, James Nickell, Alex Nickell, John Nickell, and Timmy Nickell; one brother, Bobby Jones (Ducey) of Mize, KY and Peggy Jones Prater of Jeffersonville, KY; one brother-in-law, Lynn Nickell of West Liberty, KY; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral service 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at the West Liberty Christian Church, with Bro. Hunter Fraley officiating with burial to follow in the Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, KY at 3:30 p.m. Visitation 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at the West Liberty Christian Church. Potter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers: Will Gray, James Nickell, Alex Nickell, John Nickell, Timmy Nickell, Glen Jones, Todd Frederick, and Chad Frederick.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the West Liberty Christian Church.
