Doris Jean (Risner) Owens

June 16, 1942 ~ February 27, 2022 (age 79)

Doris Jean Risner Owens of West Liberty, KY formerly of Homer, MI passed away Sunday, February 27, 2022 at St Joseph East Hospital in Lexington, KY following a brief illness at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 13 days.

Doris Jean was the sixth daughter of Sherman and Roxie Hackworth Risner born on June 16, 1942, the first of identical twin girls. Her twin sister, Maxine, was born a short time later. Doris always described herself as the mischievous one of the twins. She loved to tell stories about skipping classes while attending Homer High School, and being the one to take care of the spiders for Maxine.

Doris was united in marriage to Samuel Owens on April 22, 1961. Their union was blessed with three children, eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild is expected to arrive later this year.

She was a natural caregiver to her family and friends. Doris often said she helped raise half the children in Michigan and some in Kentucky too, which was probably a close estimate. There wasn’t a baby around that Doris couldn’t calm and settle into a deep slumber while she rocked and sang “You Are My Sunshine.” One of her greatest honors was caring for her mother, Roxie, before her death, reminiscing that she never regretted those hard days and would do it all over again. Doris was always eager to babysit or be a travel companion during trips or just shopping at the local yard sales.

Doris will be known for her love of game shows, often bargaining with her grandchildren promising they could watch cartoons whenever Price is Right and Let’s Make a Deal wasn’t airing. She would always call her granddaughter, a fellow Harry Potter fan, to inform her a Harry Potter marathon was on and she would be watching it all weekend. Her shopping lists often included her staples of milk, Pringles, and chocolate ice cream, all of which she was told numerous times she shouldn’t eat.

Where there is deep grief there was great love, Doris’s passing has left a hole in the hearts of all that loved her. She will be deeply and truly missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Owens; mother and father-in-law, Warnie and Susan Wireman Owens; three sisters, Reubena Risner, Vinetta Hackworth, and Roberta Owens.

Doris is survived by her beloved children, Sheena Harper and Steve of West Liberty, KY, Scott Owens and Amy, and Steve Owens and Marilee all of Homer, MI.

Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she affectionately called her “little loves”, telling them she loved them so much she could eat them with a spoon, which would either elicit a fit of giggles or looks of shear terror at the thought of literally being eaten with a spoon. Grandchildren are Sabrina Keaton and Ron, Stacy Harper, Samantha Owens and Anthony, Steven Owens, Stormi Jones and David, Scott Daniel Owens, Jr., Cheyenne Ledyard, and Sierra Patrick and Jacob; great-grandchildren, Kimberly Mulkey, Harper Keaton, Hudson Keaton, Haisley Purvis, Hadison Purvis, Hayden Farmer, Rhylee Jones, Owen Ledyard, Trystin Farmer, Miles Farmer and Waylon Jones; one great-great grandchild expected later this year; honorary grandchildren, Fred Taylor, Arthur Taylor, Jaysten McClure, Naziah McClure, Arayah McClure, and Iann Reynolds; and three sisters, Loretta Miller of Hillsdale, MI, Juanita Brown of Jackson, MI, and Maxine Yeager of Auburn, IN.
