Derrick Elliott Obituary

Derrick Scott Elliott, of Morehead Kentucky, departed this life, too soon, on Wednesday, June 4th, 2025, at U.K. Medical Center, in Lexington, Ky.  Derrick was born on March 16th, 1970, in Middletown, Ohio, to Lowell Scott Elliott and Mary Kathleen Franklin Elliott.  The family later relocated to West Liberty, Kentucky where Derrick grew up. He attended Morgan County schools and graduated from Morgan County High School in 1988. He was a member of Future Farmers of America and enjoyed working with animals.  He later attended Kentucky Technical Vocational School and obtained a certificate in Electrical and was a registered HVAC Apprentice. He also pursued further education in Telecommunications Installation and Locksmithing.   Derrick worked for Appalachian Regional Hospital, West Liberty, Ky, and St Claire Hospital in Morehead, Ky. Afterwards, Derrick was employed for over 20 years for the Department of Juvenile Justice at Morehead Treatment Center, which later became, Morehead Youth Development Center. 

Derrick married Amanda Lee Wright on October 25th, 2004. To this union was born one son, Derrick Matthew Elliott, on September 19th, 2008, and one daughter, Jaden Lea, on February 4th, 2011.  

Derrick was a man of impeccable morals, principles and values.  He prided himself on being dependable and responsible, prompt, and following rules and standard operating procedures.  

Derrick loved his family and spending time with them. He loved sports. He was a huge University of Kentucky Basketball fan, and enjoyed taking his children and nieces and nephews to various sporting events and amusement parks. He enjoyed attending arena football, Lexington Legends baseball, and Thoroughblades games, as well as wrestling.  Particularly, his favorite, "The American Dream," Dusty Rhodes.  

Derrick enjoyed the outdoors and loved hiking, boating, and especially loved visiting the Outer Banks, North Carolina, Maritime History and Lighthouses.  

Derrick was a television, trivia, and movie buff. He was a fan of "The Outsiders, "Star Wars," "Batman," "Gilligan's Island," "The Three Stooges," and 1960's and 1970s cartoons, "Scooby Doo," and "The Jetson's."

Derrick had a versatile musical taste and enjoyed many styles of music, including Rock and Heavy Metal. His favorites were AC/DC, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Eagles, Tom Petty, and Fleetwood Mac. 

Derrick had a quick wit and incredible sense of humor and enjoyed joking with his family and friends. He was a little mischievous, but never broke the law and was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, and son.  

Derrick was preceded in death by his mother, Mary K. Elliott, his father-in-law, Ronnie Wright, brother-in-law, Michael Wright, his grandparents, Curtis and Eva Elliott, and Marvin and Etta Franklin Link. 

Derrick is survived by his wife, Amanda Elliott, his son, Derrick Matthew Elliott, his daughter Jaden Elliott, all of Morehead, Ky.  His father, Lowell Scott Elliott of Clearfield, Kentucky, his sister Angela Elliott Chaffin, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, nephew, Andrew Tyler Jones, Deltaville, Virginia, nieces, Whitley Smith (Henry), Saluda, Virginia, Kelsey Smith (Kasay), Deltaville Virginia, and Kaitlyn Chaffin, Harrisonburg, Virginia.  Great niece, Emory Smith, Deltaville, Virginia, His mother in law Tammy McClurg (Lynn) of West Liberty, KY, sister in law, Melinda Carty (Jason), nephew, Keaven Keeton West Liberty, Ky, niece, Jaycee Carty, West Liberty, Ky. Uncle Denzil Elliott West Liberty Ky, Uncle Larry Elliott (Sandy) Paris, Kentucky, Uncle, Morris Elliott, Morehead Kentucky, Aunt Barletta Sheets, and a host of cousins and other family and friends.

He will be sorely missed by all who loved him.

Funeral service, 1 p.m., Monday, June 9, 2025 at Potter Funeral Home, with Bro. John Cox officiating.  Burial to follow in the Easterling Cemetery, Lacy Creek, KY.  Visitation 6 p.m., Sunday, June 8, 2025 at Potter Funeral Home.
