Betty Elam Obituary

Betty Ann May Elam, 83, passed away Monday, May 11, 2020 at her home in Woodsbend, Kentucky. Born August 31, 1936 in Morgan County, Kentucky, Betty was the youngest child of the late John Burns May and Zona Fugate May. On December 24, 1959, Betty was united in marriage to Norman Lee Elam, enjoying over 60 years together.

Along with her parents, Betty was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Reva May, Irene May Terrell and Edith Burns May Gunnell; two brothers, J.B. May, Jr. and Woodford Franklin May. She is survived by her husband, Norman, daughter, LeAnn Elam Spradling (Mike) both of Woodsbend, Kentucky and her very special granddaughter, Annie Burns Spradling of Ashland, Kentucky. Betty also leaves behind a sister, Eleanor May Ferguson of Grassy Creek, Kentucky, sisters-in-law, Betty Lou Elam and Linda Elam Blackburn (William) of Lexington, Kentucky and many special nieces and nephews.

For over 35 years, Betty worked for Mountain Rural Telephone and after retirement loved spending time with her family and traveling with friends. As a faithful Christian and member of the Woodsbend Community Church, she was generous with her time and service to the community.

Due to the COVID-19 requirements set forth by Governor Andy Beshear, a private graveside service for the immediate family, will be held Thursday, May 14, 2020 at the May Family Cemetery, Woodsbend, Kentucky with Reverends Robert Stilson and Jason Moore officiating.

Serving as pallbearers are her nephews: Charles Ferguson, Jr., Roger Rose, Steven May, Richard May, John Burns May and Greg Elam.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Woodsbend Community Church, 4605 Hwy 705, West Liberty, KY 41472.
