Alvin Ray Howard of Shelbyville, KY, passed away Thursday, October 21, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 78 years, 3 months, and 12 days. He was born Friday, July 9, 1943, at Cannel City, KY, son of the late Walter “Cooch” & Wilma Jane Benton Howard.
Alvin was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. His family meant the world to him.
Alvin served his country in the United States Army from 1964 to 1966. He retired from the KY State Government, and later from the Oldham County School District. He was a member of the Masons and the Shriners. Alvin was saved on February 16, 2017 and was baptized on June 18, 2017. He was a member of the House of Prayer Ministry.
If you were ever lost, Alvin was the person to call. He gave better directions that any GPS. He was also an avid musician whose talent on the banjo and guitar were unmatched. He dearly loved Bluegrass music and would travel many miles for a jam session. He was privileged to play music with so many fine musicians.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon L. Tackett Howard; his father-in-law, Milburn Tackett; a brother, Jimmy Dean Howard; a sister, Shirley Walter; and two brothers-in-law, Harold Cravens and Otis Walter.
Alvin is survived by his daughter, Tammy Martin of Shelbyville, KY; his son, Kevin Howard of Louisville, KY; three grandchildren, Brittany Elrod (Jacob), Brianna Howard, and Austin Howard; eight great grandchildren, Cheyenne Elrod, Thomas Elrod, Matthew Elrod, Jonathan Elrod, Elijah Elrod, Noah Elrod, Ella Dennis, and Jett Mullins; two sisters, Helen Cravens of Cannel City, KY, and Kathy Adkins (Garry) of Columbus, OH; one sister-in-law, Janet Howard of Cannel City, KY; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Graveside Service and burial at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at the Morris Cemetery, Caney, KY, with Bro. Bob Hall officiating. Morgan County DAV to conduct military rites at the graveside. Visitation from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Tuesday at the Potter Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: Austin Howard, Dane Cravens, Braxton Howard, Bryce Howard, Jake Henry, Norman Howard, and Jerry Jones.
